BAY CITY CHARACTERS

Bay City, California, is a fictional city that I have had in my head for years. It has appeared in many guises. It was the setting for my Homo Heroes comic book, it was the setting for my Macho Women with Guns FRPG campaign, and aspects of it have spilled over into Geobra Island, my Playmobil world. It was also featured in the Hero Trip, a super-hero FRPG that I created with another comics fan. I also intend to use it as the setting for my episode in the story "Round Robin".

All the names in Bay City are terrible puns, like the names of drag queens. The most important character is Justin Thyme, who is my own avatar. His middle name is Danika (his grandmother's name), so his full name is Justin Danika Thyme. His initials are JDT, just like mine.

The photo below is one I have wanted to take for years, but only in the last few days (July, 2008) have I assembled a cast of dolls that satisfied my requirements.

THE THYME FAMILY PORTRAIT

Back row, left to right: Justin Thyme; Dr. India House, Justin's lady;
Major Mark Thyme; Spring Thyme, Mark's wife;
Wendy Thyme Kombs; Thierry Kombs, Wendy's husband.
Front row: Moore Thyme; Marcia Thyme; Diana (Didi) Kombs,
daughter of Wendy and Thierry.

Moore Thyme is the son of farmer Hiram (Hi) Thyme and his wife Blossom. He has a brother, a Catholic priest, Father Les Thyme. (That's Father Les or Father Thyme.) He owns and operates a consulting company, Moore Thyme Inc., which advises companies on efficiency.

Marcia Thyme is the daughter of Gregory N. Callendar and his wife Danika. Marcia was known as Marcia D. Callendar before her marriage. She has a brother Julian and a sister, May Ann; she and her sister were known as the Callendar Girls. In her youth she was a debutante and socialite, and after her marriage became involved in civic and social issues. More recently she is taking control of the family business, Callendar Publishing, as her father ages and her brother and sister show no interest in the business. ('Danika' is the middle name of both Marcia and Justin.)

The oldest son, Justin, is a partner in Thyme and Tide Marine Services. His partner, Rip Tide, is mysteriously missing.

Dr. India House is the daughter of Dr. N.D. House and his wife Selma. She is Bay City's premiere physician, and runs the Dr. N. D. House Memorial Clinic. Her middle name is Summer. Her father is deceased.

Mark Thyme is a major in the army (ignore those lieutenants' bars, please), and is on detached service as head of security at the Cee-Krett Laboratory.

Spring Thyme is a kindergarten teacher. Before her marriage she was Spring Day.

Wendy Thyme Kombs is a travel agent, owner and operator of the Thyme Travel Agency.

Thierry Kombs is a Canadian citizen, and is a direct descendant of super-detective Sherlaw Kombs. Thierry runs his own detective agency in Bay City.

Didi Kombs is a baby, and that pretty much sums her up.

Juan Moore (Thyme) is the illegitimate son of Moore Thyme, conceived while Moore was on a consulting job in Mexico. Juan came to Bay City with his lover Monty Zuma, met Moore, and was recognized as a family member. He is in Moore's will. He is mentioned in Marcia's will, but not flatteringly.

Wonder where Bay City is? Well, wonder no longer!

Below you will see photographs of the 1/6th scale dolls I have chosen to represent various citizens of Bay City. By clicking on the word 'INFO' under a photo, you will be taken to an encyclopedia-type entry on that character.
